Six Tools Every Preacher Needs When the Going Gets Tough (don't miss the graphic at the end)

Every preacher has Mondays. Those tough days filled with discouragement, criticism, fatigue, and the temptation to wonder whether you’re making any difference. When those days come, there are some tools every servant of God needs in his life.

1. Focus (Hebrews 12:1-2)
The writer of Hebrews reminds us to run with endurance by "fixing our eyes on Jesus." When the work becomes difficult, it is easy to become distracted by problems, people, numbers, disappointments, or expectations. Re-centering our focus on Jesus helps us remember why we started in the first place. The preacher who keeps his eyes on Christ can continue moving forward even when the days are hard.

2. Perseverance (Galatians 6:9)
Paul says don’t grow weary in doing good because a harvest is coming. Ministry often requires sowing long before reaping. We “play the long game.” Sermons are preached, prayers are offered, visits are made, and seeds are planted without immediate results. Our mission is to be faithful - let God handle the harvest.

3. Encouragement (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
One of the easiest things to overlook when struggling is the need to encourage and be encouraged. Paul simply says build one another up. In staying in ministry, encouragement is a gift we give as well as one we receive.

4. Relationships with Fellow Ministers (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
"Two are better than one." Ministry was never intended to be a solo endeavor. As we often say, “nobody understands ministers like other ministers.” Each understands burdens that few others can fully appreciate. They know the challenges, pressures, and unique joys of the work. To stay in this we must build friendships with fellow servants who can offer perspective, counsel, and support when the load becomes heavy.

5. Prayer (Philippians 4:6-7)
Paul says bring everything to God in prayer. When anxiety rises and you’re tempted to toss in the towel prayer reconnects us to the One who is greater than every challenge. Prayer may not always change the circumstances immediately, but it changes us. God's peace guards our hearts and minds and reminds us that we are not carrying the burden alone. We can keep going but we must stay plugged in!

6. Faith (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith allows us to trust God's promises even when we cannot yet see the outcome. As Young says: “Trust is a must!” There will be days when evidence seems scarce and progress appears slow. Faith looks beyond today's frustrations and sees the God who is still working. It reminds us that the story is not finished, the harvest is not complete, and God's purposes have not failed.

When ministry is hard and quitting seems easier, reach for these tools. Focus. Perseverance. Encouragement. Fellowship. Prayer. Faith. They may not remove every obstacle, but they will help you stay in the race until God finishes what He has begun.
