CONFIRMATION
Nobody is ever going to know how you answered this question, so you can be honest: Have you ever wondered if what we believe about God, about the Bible, about how to please God in our worship, about all those things we believe are the only way to please God and get to heaven – are they true? Have we got it right, or are we believing some “cleverly devised myth”?
I will admit that from time to time, in my earlier walk with the Lord, in my less mature years, I wondered. I mean, just look around at the world and see so many people who don’t believe what we believe. Many of them are really good people; they do really nice things for people. They don’t steal or cheat. But they either have no use for the Bible, or they interpret the commandments in a totally different way than we do. How can that be?
I’ve been reading some of C. S. Lewis’ writings lately. They really encourage me. Not just his intelligence or his unique writing style. Not just his wittiness or great insights. No, what really gives me comfort is that he began his adult life as a devout atheist! He did not believe in God at all. But he studied, and questioned, and looked honestly at his findings. He was 31 years old when he said he “gave up and admitted God is real.” At the age of 33 he embraced Christianity. He wrote many books about Christianity. His words of faith have blessed so many lives.
How does that help me believe that we are truly believing in a God that exists and using a truly inspired book, the Bible, as our source of truth and how to live a Christian life? Mr. Lewis was a brilliant man, and he studied all the available information. He came up with the same conclusion that you and I have. This has happened over and over throughout history. Some very great scientists and philosophers have set out to prove the Bible a work of fiction; they ended up seeing the irrefutable fact that God is real and His word is a work of divine guidance. Satan and the world we live in will never quit trying to plant seeds of doubt in our minds. Resist; stay strong. We are on the right path – the only plan that is going to get us out of this world alive. Praise God!
