Job Description for Lions for Christ Campus Minister—East Texas A&M University
Our ministry to college students was launched in 1957 and is located adjacent to the campus. From the beginning all the way to the present, this outreach has been overseen by the elders of the Commerce Church of Christ, assisted by numerous other congregations and individuals. It is called Lions for Christ (LFC), based on the mascot of our university. We consider it a true mission field at our doorstep as we minister to students from many areas of the United States and to international students as well.
The LFC is a family, a support system, and a Christian home away from home. We encourage anyone interested in a spiritual life to come join us.
Mission: To walk college students into a relationship with God and His kingdom
Ministry Goals:
●To share the word of God with all collegians on campus
●To make believers into imitators of Jesus
●To prepare followers to make more followers of Jesus
●To glorify God with our unity
Job Description:
1. The director’s main focus is to work with students who are members of the church of Christ, equipping them to recruit fellow students. Develop and instill in Christian students the zeal, knowledge, and skills for evangelism.
2. Develop a utilization plan for the LFC facility. Maintain the facility.
3. Make a special effort to visit each supporting congregation with a group of students at least once a year.
4. Work out a student recruiting program with and through area churches.
5. Assist our youth in making a smooth transition from high school to Lions for Christ.
6. Prepare a monthly newsletter to be sent out to our supporters and prospective supporters.
7. Develop Lions for Christ website to keep local and supporting congregations abreast of the work.
8. Be active in raising support for the LFC on a continual basis.
9. Meet with the elders as they request, or you may request to meet with the elders as needed.
10. In May do an evaluation of the work and its direction, including student contacts, conversions, assessment of programs.
11. Develop a plan of work and present it to the elders prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Follow the plan and make elders aware of changes as needed.
12. Manage LFC finances and make a monthly financial report to the elders and supporting congregations. It is vital that we be good stewards of the funds entrusted to us for the LFC. Check with the elders before making purchases over $250.
13. Assist with area youth activities during the summer to recruit new students.
14. Organize and develop area-wide leaders’ appreciation dinner each fall for our supporting congregations.
15. Be a good listener and able to encourage students to make good and godly decisions.
16. Work with university officials to maintain the rights and privileges of the Lions for Christ as an official student organization.
17. Participate in special events where campus organizations are represented.
18. Conduct your private life with honor, integrity, and godliness.
19. Have fun with the students. Enjoy them, get to know them, and involve yourself in their lives. Go to their sporting events, concerts, and exhibits as often as you can. Be humble. Be patient. Be kind. Encourage and uplift them as often as you can but discipline them when you have to. Help them transition into adulthood responsibly. Challenge them to live for Jesus. Challenge them to live by faith.
Salary Range: $45,000 - $55,000
Policies for Lions for Christ Campus Minister
1. Preach the first Sunday a.m. of the fall and spring semesters in order for new students to hear you. Also be available to preach in Jimitri’s place when he is absent.
2. Plan the devo for the 3rd Wednesday of each month. This involves selecting the song leader and two prayer leaders, plus a short talk (about 10 minutes) by you or one of the LFC young men. Those you select should be members of the church of Christ.
3. Vicky Nichols, the church secretary, will serve as bookkeeper for the LFC account. An elder will sign checks for LFC expenditures.
4. For financing student outings, etc., we encourage being conservative in spending. Flexibility is needed, of course, depending on how many are going and the ability of students to pay their way. For those who cannot afford it, scholarships could be provided, perhaps in exchange for services rendered, such as helping to clean the LFC building. For retreats and such, perhaps the LFC could pay for the facility rental, and the students pay for their meals.
5. It has not been our practice in the past to pay for the campus minister’s taking courses at the university. If you choose to take courses, limit it to one per semester and check with the elders before enrolling.
6. We would like you to attend area youth events in order to recruit students for the LFC.
7. You may have two days off per week—the days of your choice with flexibility in view of the timing of LFC activities.
8. You are allowed 14 days of vacation each year. Limit the time away to no more than 2 Sundays and 3 Wednesdays per year. You must use the time within the calendar year or lose the time. Vicky Nichols can provide you with the form to request vacation time, which is to be signed by one of the elders and returned to Vicky.
9. The purpose of the LFC is to focus on the students attending East Texas A&M. This is our mission field. Instead of taking mission trips elsewhere, good alternatives include taking LFC students to visit in the local nursing home and our assisted living facility. Another opportunity for students to serve is Boles Home in our county, which provides care for children and mothers in need of a place to live.
