HOLD FAST!

One of my favorite passages is found in the middle of Hebrews chapter 10. The Bible says, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works…” (Hebrews 10:23-24, ESV). This passage is a wonderful reminder of our hope, His faithfulness, and our calling.

The Hebrew writer reminds us four other times to “hold fast” (3:6, 3:14, 4:14 and 6:18). We live in a world that tells us we should live according to our inner desires, relying on our own “knowing”. This focus on “self” can be alluring and can tempt us to loosen our grasp on our confession. Challenges in life and in ministry may tempt us to loosen our grip and allow doubt to creep in. The Hebrew writer is calling us to hold on tight, to keep a good grasp, on the hope we have through faith. We are to always remember the good news and the hope we have in Jesus without wavering! Why? Because He is faithful! We serve a faithful, loving God who offers us great hope.

Verse 23 is followed by, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works…”. It is so important that we encourage others to love and good works as we hold fast! We can stir others up by example, through service, and through encouragement. As minister’s wives, we have a special opportunity to “stir others up to love and good works”. We must lead by example. Our love and service can be a great encouragement to someone who is down and may be struggling to hold tight. Our love and good works may also bring others to come to know the hope we confess. Let’s remember to hold on firmly to the hope we have and find ways to love and encourage others this week!
