I don't Know what Kind of Monday You've Had
Barna recently released its annual report on ministers’ mental health and satisfaction. One number especially caught my attention: 24% of ministers have considered quitting, down from roughly 40% at the 2022 peak. Barna describes this as “cautious stabilization, not full recovery.” A few years ago that number pushed 50%.
Barna surveys a broad range of ministers, so its numbers will not necessarily track precisely with Gospel Preachers. In our surveys, the numbers among Gospel Preachers have generally been somewhat better.
Still, life hits all of us hard at different times, and our ultimate enemy is always after us. he knows that if he can discourage a preacher, he may also discourage some of those whom that preacher influences.
We do not know what kind of Sunday, week, or season you are facing right now. But another Barna finding deserves our attention:
“The strongest protection against leaving is relational support.”
There are many salves for a bruised spirit: prayer, fasting, singing, Scripture, rest, time, and the company of faithful friends. But among God’s greatest provisions are our brothers in ministry.
“Two are better than one…for if they fall, one will lift up his companion” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10).
Paul, an apostle, inspired writer, and courageous preacher, still needed encouragement from another servant of God: “Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus” (2 Corinthians 7:6).
Do not wait until you are ready to quit to build those relationships. Nurture the friendships that help you remain faithful, regain perspective, and continue influencing others for the Lord.
And this week, look beyond yourself. Who is the Titus you need, and who needs you to be Titus for them?
Don’t quit.
