When Jesus prayed to His Father following the Upper Room Discourse in John 17, His prayer included three distinct divisions. In verses 1-5, He spoke to God about Himself. Doing so was not a matter of pride, it was to help Himself remember that any glory He received was going to be directed back to His Father. This is a sentiment that all of God’s children should consider in our prayers.
In the second section of His prayer (vss. 6-19), Jesus prayed about HIs disciples. He was talking to God about the men who were surrounding Him and working with Him throughout His ministry. His prayer for them was they would be united in their work and that they would live sanctified lives through the Word of God.
The final section of the prayer (vss. 20-26), He said, “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word.” That would include every one of us who come to believe and obey Him through the Word. That would include you and me! Try to wrap your mind around the beautiful thought that more than 2,000 years ago our Savior prayed for us. His prayer for us again included the reality that we would be be united as HIs people based on His Word.
It is my belief that, that Jesus did not stop praying about us when He ended this prayer. I believe He continues to talk to the Father about us and in our behalf today. Our brother Paul wrote, “There is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5) Our beloved brother John reminded us, “we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1)
Dear Brother, if you are struggling with the difficulties of life and ministry, please know that you are not alone. Jesus is not only walking with you, He is praying for you. So are many of His people. If we can pray for you or be of help to you in any way, please feel free to reach out to us. We love and appreciate you greatly.
