I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone make a strong case that God rested on the seventh day after creating the world because He was tired. Some have said that He did so because He wanted us to know that it’s okay to rest. Others believe that it was our Maker’s way of including rest in His creation.
It makes for an interesting discussion, and I would love to know your thoughts. What we know for sure is that God rested and that He commanded that His people remember the Sabbath Day. Included in that Sabbath Day was time for worship and rest.
Do you ever wonder if God allows circumstances to be created so that we can do what we ned to do, but might not do if the circumstances were not what they are? For example, the ice (and a little snow) that has impacted our neck of the woods has created the potential for a lot of preachers to take a day off and do little of anything. At least compared to what might normally happen on a Monday.
Maybe a day to spend extra time with the wife, the kids, and/or the grands. Maybe spend the day doing something different.
Oh, I know, someone reading this is saying, What do you mean rest??? I stayed in and wrote the rest of my sermons for the year, wrote a couple of books, and read a couple more.
For some of us, rest, reflection, and renewal aren’t easy. We weren’t raised that way. That’s not how our parents were. We’ve never really done that before me. Believe me, I know all of the excuses. I’ve used them all.
But maybe a day like this saved someone from burnout, from throwing in the towel, and allowed you to thrive for another season. We could argue about whether God caused it or just allowed it. Or, we could praise Him and enjoy a little Sabbath rest!
