Be Careful

One of my favorite Texas preachers often says, upon seeing something strange or different, “There are some things you just can’t unsee!”

I would add that it is also true that there are some things we can’t unsay. Do you remember the words from an old children’s song that says,  “Be careful little mouth what you say?”

We live in an age where it seems that very little thought is given to the words that flow from our mouths. One would think that followers of King Jesus would be different, especially those of us who claim to speak for Him? If we are followers of Jesus, we will be careful with our words. The words we speak, the words we write, and the words we POST can seriously harm others. Once words come from our lips, pen, or keyboard, it is impossible to get them back.

We must remember to think before we speak or write. Hiding under the guise of “I’m just one of those people who speak my mind” or “I always say what I think” is no excuse for unkind, uncaring, unchristian words.

Our words should always be thoughtful and caring. As disciples of King Jesus, we must seek to build up our fellow Christians rather than tearing them down or winning an argument. Our words should always be seasoned with grace. “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29) We should always and only speak words that glorify God. ”For the Father up above is looking down in love, so be careful little mouth what you say.” And above all, we should never quit telling others the Good News about Jesus!
